Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez faces mounting opposition and calls for resignation

Spain’s government led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is under intense parliamentary pressure. Recent judicial rulings, including a 24‑year prison sentence for former minister José Luis Ábalos and investigations into ex‑premier José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, have eroded confidence in Sánchez’s leadership among coalition partners.

Opposition parties are exploiting the crisis. Junts per Catalunya, represented by Jordi Turull, has publicly demanded Sánchez’s resignation, stating, “Sánchez has lost the confidence of the majority that invested him.” ERC and other regional forces have warned against any alliance with the far‑right Vox, while the PP has floated a motion of censure. Media outlets criticize Sánchez’s handling of the scandals as dangerous to democratic norms.

The combined political fallout threatens the stability of the current legislature, with calls for early elections and negotiations for a new governing arrangement gaining traction.
