Spanish prison staff report security and medical shortages
Prison officials in Spain are raising alarms regarding critical shortages of security and medical personnel. In El Puerto, the CSIF union has denounced a “critical situation of insecurity” involving the three local penitentiary centers, which house approximately 2,000 inmates. Due to a lack of Guardia Civil officers, prison staff have been forced to escort urgent medical transfers in ambulances or even in private vehicles, increasing the risk of escapes or violent incidents.
Simultaneously, the Villahierro Provincial Penitentiary Center is seeking to outsource medical services to address a looming healthcare crisis. The facility currently operates with only two doctors for 1,000 inmates, following the upcoming retirement of a third physician. Prison director Nélida de Andrés noted that the General Secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions has shown no intention of filling these vacancies in the short term. The outsourcing aims to ensure healthcare compliance and prevent the unnecessary strain on local hospital emergency services.
