Spanish progressive leaders call for unity ahead of elections
Progressive political leaders in Spain are calling for increased unity and the immediate resolution of internal debates to prepare for upcoming elections.
Carles Esteve, spokesperson for Iniciativa-Compromís, has urged the party to finalize discussions regarding alliances. He emphasized the need to negotiate agreements with other progressive forces and civil society. Esteve also proposed that the left must address public concerns regarding security by linking it to the welfare state and social rights, rather than allowing it to be used as a tool of political manipulation.
Simultaneously, Gabriel Rufián of Esquerra Republicana (ERC) has issued an ultimatum to progressive allies, stating, “Whoever does not unite, should step aside.” Rufián warned that internal fragmentation and cross-party attacks within the left are being exploited by right-wing strategies. He argued that the best way to counter the right is to avoid conflict with other left-wing formations and instead focus on strategic cohesion.
