Spanish Prosecutor calls for specialized courts to fight drug trafficking

Spain's Chief Anti-Drug Prosecutor, Rosa Ana Morán, has characterized drug trafficking in Andalusia as a “structural” problem. Highlighting the region's proximity to the Strait of Gibraltar, Morán warned that the current fight against narcotics is hindered by a lack of human and material resources. She specifically called for the creation of specialized courts for organized crime, similar to those established for gender violence, to ensure that investigations lead to successful convictions rather than just arrests and seizures.

The annual report from the Prosecutor's Office describes an increasingly violent landscape where drug trafficking is undermining “the foundations of social peace.” The report notes an unprecedented geographic expansion of criminal activity and a rise in judicial cases.

The Association of Civil Guards (AUGC) has backed these findings, noting that the threat has escalated to include the use of war weapons, such as AK-47 rifles and rocket launchers, used not only against rival clans but openly against law enforcement officers. The AUGC emphasized that the reality of officers facing such weaponry moves the debate beyond mere statistics.
