Spain housing debate intensifies amid political criticism and regional challenges

In Almería, Carmen Fúnez, the People's Party (PP) Vice-Secretary for Health and Social Policy, criticized President Pedro Sánchez during a youth organization event in Níjar. Fúnez argued that the government has failed to address the housing crisis over the last eight years, describing current legislative attempts as improvised. She highlighted that housing shortages are a primary obstacle for young people, delaying their ability to move out, start families, or accept jobs in different cities. The PP proposed increasing housing supply by mobilizing land, reducing bureaucracy, and implementing measures such as a 4% VAT on first homes and new savings instruments.

In other regions, housing challenges continue to drive local discourse. In Granada, construction and promotion associations are calling for the acceleration of urban planning and a reduction in administrative bureaucracy to address land shortages and labor deficits. Meanwhile, in Palencia, the Provincial Council is promoting strategies to combat demographic challenges in mountain areas by improving housing availability and rehabilitation to encourage rural residency.
