Spanish rail networks face infrastructure and service challenges

Rail networks in Spain are facing significant operational challenges due to infrastructure deficiencies and aging fleets. In Asturias, the narrow-gauge network (formerly Feve) is experiencing a decline, with an average of 18 daily incidents and peaks exceeding 25. While high-speed services have improved regional connectivity, the commuter services serving rural areas suffer from outdated convoys, slow sections, and uncompetitive schedules.

In Catalonia, the Manresa line continues to struggle with speed restrictions. Five months after the temporary free fare period ended, several slow sections remain due to safety concerns. Specifically, there are 13 slow sections between Manresa and Segarra, and three between Tàrrega and Cervera. Additionally, service on the R13 and R14 lines remains interrupted between Les Borges Blanques and La Plana-Picamoixons following cable theft in July, forcing passengers to use alternative bus services.
