Spain faces growing pressure over railway safety and service failures
Spain is experiencing significant tension regarding its railway infrastructure following a series of accidents and service disruptions. The Spanish Confederation of Travel Agencies (CEAV) has requested an urgent meeting with the Ministry of Transport to address concerns over high-speed rail safety and the potential economic impact on tourism caused by recent accidents in Urda and Adamuz.
In the Valencian Community, regional authorities have filed a formal complaint with the central government. Vice President Vicente Martínez Mus demanded explanations for the deteriorating service in both high-speed and commuter (Cercanías) lines, noting that recent failures at the Albacete control center have disrupted travel for thousands in Valencia and Alicante.
Victim advocacy groups are also demanding systemic changes. The Association of Victims of the Adamuz derailment has proposed a State Pact for Railway Safety, calling on political parties to commit to long-term safety, maintenance, and victim support by November 11. Additionally, survivors of the Angrois derailment have called for a meeting with the Ministry, arguing that technical failures in continuous speed control systems remain a critical vulnerability in the national network.
