Spanish regional and municipal authorities cut supplier payment times

In May, the autonomous community of Extremadura paid its suppliers in an average of 23.46 days, comfortably below the 30‑day legal limit and faster than the national average of 24.17 days for Spain’s regions. The region’s performance placed it ahead of several others that exceeded the limit, such as the Balearic Islands and Castilla‑La León.

During the second quarter of 2026, the municipality of Antequera reduced its average payment period to 18.3 days, a dramatic improvement from the 547‑day average recorded in 2011. The city settled roughly €11 million across nearly 3,000 invoices, easing cash‑flow pressures for local freelancers and SMEs. Both cases illustrate a broader trend of Spanish public bodies accelerating payments to smaller suppliers.
