Spanish regional heritage highlights biodiversity and pastoral history
Various regional cultural and natural heritage initiatives are highlighting the historical and ecological evolution of Spanish landscapes. In Alpedrete, a biodiversity route is being organized to explore the former granite quarries. These sites, which once provided stone for landmarks such as the Royal Palace and the Monastery of El Escorial, are now being reclaimed by nature, creating new habitats for diverse flora and fauna.
In the Sayago region of Zamora, specifically in Torregamones within the Arribes del Duero Natural Park, traditional pastoral structures known as ‘chiviteros’ are being preserved. These stone and thatch shelters were historically used by shepherds to protect newborn goats from predators like wolves. The park has maintained several well-preserved examples to showcase the region's pastoral history and the lifestyle of past inhabitants.
