Spanish regional leaders call for motorway improvements and debate toll returns

Mayors along the Costa del Sol are demanding government action to address chronic traffic congestion and delayed infrastructure projects. In Catalonia, discussions have emerged regarding the potential return of tolls on major highways like the AP-7. While the removal of tolls five years ago contributed to a decrease in accidents, the lack of toll revenue and the subsequent surge in traffic—particularly from heavy trucks—has led to significant congestion. Experts suggest that the AP-7 is currently unable to handle the volume of vehicles, prompting debates over whether state-managed toll roads should be reinstated to manage traffic and fund necessary modernizations.
