Spanish regional parliaments pay higher salaries than national Congress

An analysis of the 17 autonomous regional parliaments in Spain reveals significant disparities in salaries, with 11 regional chambers paying higher base salaries than members of the Congress of Deputies and the Senate.

The Basque Parliament records the highest monthly gross salary at 5,879 euros, while the Parliament of Galicia offers the lowest at approximately 2,360 euros, representing a difference of over 90% between the two extremes. Other regions with base salaries exceeding national parliamentary levels include Extremadura, the Balearic Islands, Asturias, Navarra, Murcia, the Canary Islands, Madrid, and Andalusia.

In Andalusia, the base salary is 3,599.78 euros, surpassing the monthly allocations for deputies in the Congress (3,366.99 euros) and senators (3,417.54 euros). Total compensation in most chambers is heavily influenced by additional supplements for specific roles, such as presiding over committees, acting as group spokespersons, or holding positions on the parliamentary board (Mesa).
