Spanish regional technology sectors show divergent trends
The Basque Country is facing a 30 percent reduction in its budget for the technology park network for the upcoming year. The allocated amount of 55.7 million euros for 2027 represents a decrease from the 81.5 million euros budgeted for 2026. This reduction affects Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, though the budget for Álava is expected to double due to high occupancy rates exceeding 94 percent.
In Bizkaia, the budget will drop to 32 million euros from 45 million euros. Key planned investments include over 14.2 million euros for the Zorrozaurre Campus as part of a long-term plan through 2030, alongside smaller allocations for the Abanto and Zamudio-Derio campuses.
Meanwhile, Aragon is strengthening its position in the deep tech ecosystem. The region now hosts 26 deep tech spin-offs, accounting for 2.6 percent of the total in Spain. The University of Zaragoza has also seen growth, ranking ninth nationally in deep tech spin-off creation. Aragon shows high specialization in advanced materials, computing, and artificial intelligence, with its specialization index in advanced materials being more than double the national average.
