Spanish regions relax restrictions on bovine events due to disease trends

Authorities in the Spanish regions of Cantabria and Asturias have announced the easing of restrictions regarding contagious nodular dermatosis (DNC) in cattle.

In Cantabria, a new resolution from the Directorate General of Livestock will allow the presence of cattle at fairs, contests, and exhibitions starting November 1. While relaxing certain activities, the region maintains sanitary vigilance. Animals from outside Cantabria must undergo official veterinary supervision and a minimum 28-day quarantine. Exceptions include movements to slaughterhouses, bullfighting events, and specific livestock markets.

Similarly, the Government of Asturias will authorize fairs, auctions, and markets involving cattle from November 1 until December 31. This decision follows a favorable epidemiological evolution of DNC, aided by vaccination efforts and the seasonal reduction of insect vectors. To participate, animals must have continuously resided in Asturias since June 1, 2026, or be born within the community after that date without leaving. Farms receiving animals from risk zones must implement a 21-day quarantine and mandatory disinsectation of livestock and transport vehicles.
