Spanish religious brotherhoods unveil new embroidered tunics
Religious brotherhoods in Spain are introducing new embroidered tunics for their sacred images to enhance their cultural and spiritual heritage.
In Cuenca, the Real Esclavitud de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno de Medinaceli has unveiled a new tunic created by Macarena Sanz Sánchez of the Bordados en Oro San Julián workshop. Designed to mark the brotherhood's 75th anniversary, the garment features a sober design in a deep maroon-purple shade described as ‘dried blood’. The iconography includes symbolic elements such as a crown of thorns, nails, and a broken chain representing liberation, alongside motifs related to the historical ransom of the image.
Separately, the Hermandad de la Redención has presented a project for a new embroidered tunic for Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Redención. Designed by Miguel Clarós and to be produced by the Dolores Fernández workshops, the piece utilizes asymmetrical compositions and rich ornamentation. The design incorporates flowers, thistles, and thorns to evoke the Passion, as well as scallop shells and palm motifs that reference the brotherhood's connection to the Church of Santiago el Mayor and the Apostle Santiago.
