Spanish researchers advance solar energy and greenhouse technologies

Researchers in Spain are advancing two distinct renewable energy technologies aimed at improving efficiency and climate adaptation.

A team from the University of Jaén has demonstrated that installing semitransparent photovoltaic modules on greenhouse roofs can improve the internal microclimate. By using technologies such as cadmium telluride or amorphous silicon, the panels produce electricity while reducing heat and water demand. This agrivoltaic approach helps protect crops like tomatoes and lettuce from extreme temperatures and water scarcity by creating a cooler, more humid environment.

Separately, the Plataforma Solar de Almería (PSA) is participating in international research into solar salt storage. The study investigates using microwaves to heat molten salt—a mixture of sodium and potassium nitrate—to store thermal energy. While this method aims to provide more uniform heating than conventional resistance systems and prevent material degradation, researchers have noted a significant challenge: microwaves have difficulty penetrating the salt once it is in a molten state.
