Spanish researchers develop AI tools for medical diagnostics

Researchers in Spain are developing artificial intelligence systems to improve medical diagnostics in dermatology and microbiology.

The University of Alicante and Sant Joan d’Alacant University Hospital have implemented MEL-IA (MobilE skin Lesion dIAgnosis). This system automates the classification of skin lesions, such as moles or spots, through a mobile application and an AI model. The technology is designed to integrate securely into hospital IT infrastructures, supporting healthcare staff in early cancer detection.

Separately, the University of Alcalá and the Príncipe de Asturias University Hospital have developed an AI system to detect Trichomonas vaginalis, a microorganism responsible for trichomoniasis. By applying AI to microscopic images obtained through standard Gram staining, the system achieved a 93% accuracy rate in identifying positive cases. This tool aims to support clinical decision-making, particularly in environments where access to molecular testing is limited.
