Spanish residents protest proposed biomethane plants

Residents in several Spanish municipalities are protesting against proposed biomethane plant projects. In Villacastín, approximately 350 people gathered to demonstrate against a facility planned less than two kilometers from the town center. The Stop Biogás Villacastín platform issued a manifesto stating the project, which aims to treat 178,000 tons of waste annually, is unnecessary as the area lacks significant waste or slurry issues. Residents expressed concerns regarding odors, increased heavy vehicle traffic, and potential impacts on natural resources, specifically the San Bartolomé aquifer.

In Calamocha, the Stop Biogás Jiloca platform has criticized the local City Council for failing to submit formal objections to a proposed biomethane plant. The platform claims the council has not conducted an exhaustive technical review of the project. Residents in the area have raised concerns regarding the facility's proximity to populated areas and its potential effects on the local environment and economy.
