Lidl and Mercadona implement price cuts and expansion strategies
Major European retailers Lidl and Mercadona are implementing distinct strategic shifts in pricing and expansion.
Lidl has reported an 8% reduction in its overall shopping basket cost in 2026, with 800 items seeing permanent price cuts across food, hygiene, and cleaning categories. This follows a campaign to lower costs on essential items like school supplies. However, in Denmark, Lidl has withdrawn a planned promotion for organic products, citing the previous low-price announcement as an error.
Mercadona is focusing on infrastructure and market reach. In Spain, the company has invested 6.5 million euros to open a new ‘Store 9’ model supermarket in Canals, featuring an integrated central bakery and optimized layouts.
