Spanish Senate censures Energy Minister Sara Aagesen as she urges EU to speed up green transition

On 13 May 2026 the Spanish Senate voted to reproach and demand the dismissal of Vice‑President and Minister for Ecological Transition Sara Aagesen Muñoz. The motion, backed by the governing People's Party, cited a lack of transparency in her handling of the 28 April 2025 nationwide blackout, accusing her of presenting a narrative that conflicted with technical evidence. The vote recorded 144 senators in favour, 102 against and 11 abstentions, calling for her immediate removal.

At the same time, Minister Aagesen addressed the EU informal Energy Council in Nicosia, calling for a "faster and more ambitious" European response to the energy crisis triggered by the war in the Middle East. She advocated new EU funds for electrification, renewable investments and grid expansion, greater fiscal flexibility for Member States, and a balanced approach to extraordinary profits by energy companies. Spain, she noted, aims for 22.5 GW of storage by 2030 and has reduced gas‑linked electricity pricing since 2018, positioning the country as a model for the green transition.

The two developments highlight a clash between domestic political accountability over the 2025 blackout and the minister’s push for a broader European energy overhaul.
