Spanish shaman released on bail in Plovdiv drug investigation
Jose Manuel Giamon Nicolas, a 58-year-old Spaniard known as the shaman of Kalofere, has been released from custody following a court decision in Plovdiv. The Appellate Court set a bail amount of 15,000 euros, determining that pretrial detention was no longer necessary as there was no immediate risk of him committing new crimes.
The investigation began following a joint operation by the State Agency for National Security (DANS) and the Plovdiv Ministry of Interior on September 26. During searches of a community located near the Balkan Mountains, authorities discovered cacti, mushrooms, plant matter, and liquids containing psychoactive substances.
The case involves a closed community centered around spiritual practices and rituals led by Nicolas. While the investigation explores the presence of illegal substances and paid spiritual services, Nicolas denies any criminal wrongdoing and has expressed his intention to remain in the country to care for the site and its members.
