Elderly welfare and cognitive health initiatives highlighted

International Day of Older Persons has highlighted various initiatives and research focused on elderly welfare and cognitive health. In Spain, organizations like AMAS are expanding home assistance services to combat loneliness and promote autonomy, while the Colectivos de Acción Solidaria (CAS) has coordinated the delivery of postcards to public officials to advocate for improved care models and dignity for the elderly.

Medical research and health experts are emphasizing the importance of proactive brain care. The Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN) is promoting awareness through its ‘Brain Week’ and mobile clinics. Scientific studies suggest that lifestyle habits—such as regular physical activity, social engagement, and specific dietary choices like consuming oily fish or cooking at home at least once a week—can significantly reduce the risk of dementia and cognitive decline.

However, structural challenges remain. Reports indicate that up to 40% of homes in certain Spanish regions lack the necessary architectural adaptations for aging residents, limiting their mobility and quality of life. Additionally, neurologists warn against the ‘diagnostic eclipsing’ of cognitive changes in people with disabilities, urging caregivers to distinguish between normal aging and treatable neurological conditions.
