Spanish Society of Rheumatology clarifies diet and rheumatic disease myths

The Spanish Society of Rheumatology (SER) has addressed common misconceptions regarding the relationship between diet and rheumatic diseases, such as arthritis and osteoarthritis. Experts emphasize that while a healthy diet can support general well-being and complement medical treatments, there is no scientific evidence that specific foods or supplements can cure these conditions or significantly alter their evolution on their own.

Dietary patterns like the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in plant-based foods and healthy fats, are associated with moderate benefits and may help manage systemic inflammation. Conversely, the “Western diet”—characterized by ultra-processed foods, red meats, and sugary drinks—can exacerbate inflammation.

Medical professionals caution against unproven elimination diets. Currently, there is no solid evidence that removing gluten or dairy improves symptoms for all patients, except in those with diagnosed intolerances. Experts stress that nutrition should be viewed as a complementary support rather than a curative tool.
