Spanish soldier dies in Aragon wildfire response

A Spanish soldier has died while fighting a major wildfire in the Aragon region of northeastern Spain. The fatality occurred when the soldier's fire truck plunged into a ravine near Mount Oroel during operations in the Penas de Riglos area.

Three other occupants of the vehicle sustained various injuries and were transported to hospitals. The incident occurred during what regional authorities describe as the largest firefighting deployment in Aragon's history.

The wildfire has consumed approximately 17,500 hectares, driven by high temperatures and unpredictable winds. More than 1,000 people have been evacuated from surrounding villages as the flames approach the historic San Juan de la Peña monasteries. Authorities have worked to secure the medieval sites, which are significant cultural landmarks of the region.
