Spanish exports face US tariff impact and rising energy costs

Spanish exports to the United States have declined by 9% following the imposition of US tariffs. While Minister of Economy Carlos Cuerpo has characterized the overall macroeconomic impact as limited, the effects are unevenly distributed across sectors and company sizes. Small businesses are particularly vulnerable; approximately 50% of companies exporting less than 50,000 euros to the US have ceased operations in that market.

Significant declines have been noted in the fuels and mineral oils sector, down 381 million euros, and the fats and oils sector, including olive oil, which fell by 393 million euros. To mitigate these losses, many Spanish exporters have increased their turnover in other global markets by 50%.

Separately, the Spanish steel industry is facing severe pressure from rising electricity costs, having accumulated 658 million euros in energy overcosts. This has led some manufacturers to begin halting production during peak electricity hours to manage expenses.
