Spanish supermarket prices see shifts in oil and essential goods
Recent reports indicate shifting price trends in Spanish supermarkets. According to Facua-Consumidores en Acción, sunflower oil has increased in price by 4.1% over the last year. This contrasts with extra virgin olive oil, which has seen price decreases at major retailers such as Mercadona, Dia, and Carrefour.
Other essential goods showing sustained price increases between August 2025 and August 2026 include eggs, potatoes, and pasta. Eggs have seen the most significant rise, with costs increasing by 8.7% annually, partly attributed to production challenges caused by avian flu.
Additionally, controversy has emerged regarding product volume changes at Mercadona. Consumers have noted that certain products, such as fabric softener, appear to have smaller packaging despite maintaining the same price. Mercadona has responded to these claims by stating that they have concentrated the formula, allowing for a smaller bottle size while maintaining the same number of washes per unit.
