Spanish supermarkets face €130 million in extra costs due to Middle East conflict

Spanish supermarkets have accumulated over €130 million in additional costs due to the conflict in the Middle East, according to data released by ASEDAS (the Spanish Association of Distributors, Autoservices, and Supermarkets). The industry group estimates that companies are facing between €20 million and €25 million in extra monthly expenses driven by rising energy, fuel, and raw material costs.

ASEDAS identified three primary factors pressuring the sector: a 53% increase in electricity adjustment services, a 35.5% year-on-year rise in diesel prices affecting logistics, and a 25% increase in the cost of plastic raw materials used for food packaging. These increases are linked to the conflict's impact on energy markets and the petrochemical industry.

While the general Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose to 4.9% year-on-year in September, food prices saw a more modest annual increase of 2.7%.
