Spanish Supreme Court issues rulings on amnesty and Puigdemont case

The Spanish Supreme Court has issued significant rulings regarding the legal aftermath of the Catalan independence movement. In one decision, the Court applied the amnesty law to Oriol Junqueras, Dolors Bassa, Jordi Turull, and Raül Romeva, declaring their criminal responsibility extinguished. This move follows a Constitutional Court ruling that found the Supreme Court's previous interpretation of the law violated the right to effective judicial protection.

The Supreme Court's resolution expressed sharp disagreement with the Constitutional Court, describing its reasoning as ‘unnecessarily grandiloquent’ and ‘invasive’ of the Supreme Court's jurisdiction. This has highlighted a profound institutional conflict between Spain's highest judicial bodies.

Separately, the long-standing legal battle involving Carles Puigdemont continues. For nine years, Supreme Court judge Pablo Llarena and Puigdemont's lawyer, Gonzalo Boye, have engaged in a legal duel spanning multiple European jurisdictions. The proceedings, which began following the 2017 independence declaration, have tested both Spanish judicial institutions and European legal frameworks.
