José Luis Ábalos: Supreme Court upholds 24-year prison sentence

The Spanish Supreme Court has rejected nullity motions filed by former Transport Minister José Luis Ábalos and his former advisor, Koldo García, upholding their respective prison sentences of 24 and 19 years.

The convictions, stemming from the ‘mask case’, involve charges of criminal organization, bribery, influence peddling, and embezzlement. The court dismissed arguments regarding the violation of fundamental rights, such as the right to a presumption of innocence and the right to a double instance in criminal proceedings.

With the dismissal of these incidents, the ordinary judicial route is exhausted. José Luis Ábalos has announced his intention to appeal the ruling to the Constitutional Court, alleging a violation of fundamental rights and questioning the Supreme Court's competence to judge him following his resignation as a deputy.
