Spanish Tax Agency to issue mass notifications to taxpayers in September

The Spanish Tax Agency (Agencia Tributaria) is expected to issue mass notifications to thousands of taxpayers, particularly self-employed individuals (autónomos), during September. These notices typically arise from discrepancies found when the agency cross-references tax returns with data provided by banks, clients, and various platforms.

Common issues that trigger these inquiries include undeclared public subsidies (such as those for electric vehicles or home renovations), omitted income, incorrectly applied regional deductions, and inconsistencies in tax withholdings. While receiving a notification does not automatically result in a fine, failure to respond or correct errors can lead to penalties of up to 150% of the debt owed.

Taxpayers are advised to regularly check their electronic mailbox at the Tax Agency's headquarters. To prepare, self-employed individuals should review their filed returns against their actual invoices and bank statements, paying close attention to economic activity earnings and withholdings to ensure all reported income matches the data held by the administration.
