Spanish thermal power plants undergo decommissioning

Industrial decommissioning efforts are progressing at major Spanish thermal power plants. Repsol has begun the dismantling and demolition process of the Escucha thermal power station. The facility, which ceased operations in 2012 after four decades, is being dismantled in a planned, progressive manner over several months. The Government of Aragon decided against granting the building heritage protection, such as ‘Bien de Interés Cultural’, after determining there was no official viability project to justify its conservation.

In a separate operation, the dismantling of the Narcea thermal power station, owned by Naturgy, has reached significant milestones. Lezama Demoliciones recently completed the complex removal of a cable-stayed walkway spanning the Narcea River. The structure, which supported conveyor belts for coal transport, was removed using controlled structural states to ensure the riverbed remained unaffected and the stability of the tensioned system was maintained.
