Spanish towns boost forest fire prevention with expanded clearing projects

In Ponferrada, the regional Plan Montel continues summer de‑vegetation and cleaning across ten municipalities, including work around the San Clemente de Valdueza treatment plant, Monte Pajariel, and urban streets such as Calle Panamá. Environment councilor Carlos Fernández highlighted the €96,000 investment and the aim to improve public spaces, reduce wildfire risk, and preserve natural heritage.

In the Galician towns of O Porriño and Mos, mayor Alejandro Lorenzo and environment councilor Carlos González oversaw additional de‑brushings, biomass management and forest maintenance. The effort added five workers in O Porriño and a team of four forest workers plus a technical specialist in Mos, funded through the regional Rural Talent program. Activities focus on clearing vegetation, pruning, and preparing land for reforestation to lower fire danger.

Both initiatives reflect coordinated municipal actions to strengthen fire‑prevention measures across Spain’s diverse regions.
