Vilagarcía de Arousa celebrates Festa da Auga amidst intense heat
The Festa da Auga in Vilagarcía de Arousa took place on August 16, 2026, amidst intense heat and a red alert issued by the Consellería de Sanidade. The celebration featured the traditional procession of San Roque, who was carried through the streets accompanied by a musical band and a dog.
Participants engaged in the festival's signature water activities, using water pistols and buckets to cool off, as the city moved away from using fire trucks to spray crowds. Large water tanks were provided by the local council for residents to refill containers.
The preceding night was reported as relatively calm by local authorities. Security forces and emergency services recorded one arrest for an assault involving a glass and 14 medical transfers, most of which were due to alcohol intoxication. The highest concentration of people was noted in the TIR area near the port and at A Concha beach.
