Spanish towns invest millions in summer school upgrades

The municipality of Lorca in southeastern Spain allocated roughly €100,000 for summer improvements to its schools, part of a broader €1 million programme that includes ventilation, shading, painting and repairs to address heat and damage from past storms. Councilor for Education Rosa María Medina highlighted installations such as sliding awnings, fans, waterproofing and the creation of a "Future Classroom".

In Madrid’s Chamartín district, the local council has earmarked €2.69 million for a new wave of works at ten public primary schools and nursery facilities. The plan covers comprehensive upgrades—including electrical, heating, climate‑control, fire‑safety, accessibility and energy‑efficiency measures—with individual project budgets ranging from €100,000 to €400,000. The summer works aim to modernise the buildings without disrupting the school year.

Both initiatives use the school holidays to carry out renovations, seeking to improve safety, comfort and the overall learning environment for students and staff.
