Andalusian towns suspend fireworks at patron festivals over fire risk

Following a proposal by the Andalusian Emergency Councilor, dozens of municipalities in Andalusia have ordered the suspension of fireworks during their patron saint festivals because of an elevated risk of forest fires. The decree, supported by Vice President Antonio Sanz, applies to towns such as Baeza, Fondón, Fuente Victoria, Benecid, Ablay, San Roque, Moguer and others, with the aim of protecting public safety and preventing wildfires.

In Baeza the traditional August fireworks display has been moved to 30 November, coinciding with the feast of San Andrés. Other Spanish localities are proceeding with their summer celebrations, featuring religious processions, concerts, sports events and cultural activities. Highlights include the night of 20 000 candles in Algeciras, the extensive program of the San Roque festivities in Llanes, and the 103‑year anniversary festival in Lanús, Argentina, which combines live music, a food market and community‑focused initiatives.

These measures and events illustrate how towns across Spain and beyond are adapting traditional patronal celebrations to address safety concerns while maintaining cultural heritage.
