Spanish towns launch urban art festivals showcasing gender equality and community
The Instituto de la Mujer of Castilla‑La Mancha visited the Astarté International Urban Art Festival in Iniesta, Cuenca, from June 29 to July 4, 2026. Director Teresa López Tomé praised the event’s role in giving women artists space in rural towns, noting that such visibility enriches cultural life and offers new futures for younger women. Five international muralists, including Zurik, Deih, Felipe Pincel, Laura Merayo and Xelon, created works across the town’s streets and municipal auditorium, complemented by music performances and workshops in sculpture, photography, ceramics, art‑therapy and textile activism.
Meanwhile, Tudela’s municipal council prepared for the third edition of the Futura Tudela urban art festival, scheduled for July 15‑23. Four new murals will be painted by local and international artists, among them Belén Puyo, the “Chica de la Lambretta,” and the duo Octavio Macías and Ester González. Officials highlighted the project’s aim to turn public spaces into community hubs, encouraging residents to witness the creative process firsthand. Both festivals illustrate a broader push in Spain to blend street art with cultural inclusion and regional development.
