Spanish towns rally against new biogas plants over health and environmental fears

Community groups in several Spanish municipalities have organized protests against proposed biogas (biometanisation) facilities, citing lack of transparency, possible health risks and feared environmental damage. Platforms such as Salvemos La Coronada in Extremadura, labour union Labrego Galego in Galicia, and Zamora en Pie in Castrogonzalo have demanded epidemiological studies, citizen‑monitoring committees and stronger municipal authority over approvals. Regional assemblies are reacting by amending regulations to give towns greater say in site authorisation. The dispute pits proponents who view biogas as a circular‑economy solution for waste and renewable energy against residents who warn of contamination, odours and pressure on local water resources.
