Spanish towns Soria and Puerto Real launch brown organic waste containers

Soria will introduce brown containers for organic waste after the San Saturio festivities, following the completion of the Golmayo treatment plant’s organic line. Residents will use individual cards that do not store personal data, allowing easy and controlled collection of food scraps and garden waste.

In Puerto Real, about a thousand households have already received organic‑waste kits that include a 10‑liter ventilated bucket, compostable bags and instructional material. The city has installed 55 brown bins and plans to reach 70 soon and 150 later, while a door‑to‑door campaign has visited over 3,300 homes. The initiative complies with Spain’s Law 7/2022 on waste and circular economy, aiming to raise recycling rates and divert organic material from gray bins toward compost or renewable energy production.
