Spain railway strikes: Semaf maintains Renfe walkouts after failed talks

Spanish railway unions have announced a series of strikes following failed negotiations with the Ministry of Transport. The Sindicato Español de Maquinistas Ferroviarios (Semaf) is maintaining its planned 24-hour strike at Renfe for November 10, alongside partial strikes on November 12. These actions follow meetings between Semaf representatives and Carlos Cuerpo, the First Vice President who is temporarily managing the Transport portfolio, which reportedly yielded no concrete agreements.

In addition to the Semaf actions, a broader general strike is scheduled for November 17. This includes 24-hour strikes at Adif and Renfe, organized by various unions including CCOO, UGT, CGT, SF, and the Sindicato de Circulación Ferroviario (SCF). The SCF has specifically called for 24-hour stoppages at Adif on November 17 and 19, citing staffing shortages and the need for technical instruction updates to ensure safety.

While the Semaf has successfully de-escalated its conflict with the operator Ouigo, canceling strikes previously planned for November 6, 9, and December 4 and 8, the wider industrial action remains a significant threat to the national rail network. Demands from the unions center on improving railway safety, increasing staff in control centers, and reviewing technical regulations following a fatal accident in Urda.
