Spanish training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano joins US 250th Independence celebrations

The Spanish Navy’s training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano arrived in Norfolk, Virginia, to take part in Sail250 Virginia, a major gathering of more than 60 tall ships from around twenty countries marking the United States’ 250th anniversary of independence. After a parade through the Chesapeake Bay, the vessel joined the event’s on‑shore programme that includes public visits and cultural exchanges involving roughly 4,000 crew members.

From Norfolk the ship will continue its east‑coast itinerary, stopping in Baltimore before reaching New York on 3 July to participate in the central July 4 celebrations. Alongside El Canaco, Spain will field the amphibious assault ship Castilla, the strategic projection ship Juan Carlos I, frigates Blas de Lezo and Reina Sofía, the supply ship Patiño, about 2,500 naval personnel, and a squadron of 129 Air Force pilots flying Eurofighters, F‑18s, Airbus A330s and an A400M for transport and rescue support. The combined Spanish deployment underscores the historic naval ties between Spain and the United States during the quadricentennial festivities.
