Spanish transport sector sees VTC growth and seasonal shifts
The Spanish transportation sector is experiencing significant shifts in demand and competition. In the Balearic Islands, the discretionary transport sector is reporting a slower summer season compared to 2025. Rafael Roig, president of the Balearic Business Federation of Transport (FEBT), noted that a decline in organized tourist excursions has led to high idle rates for large-capacity coaches, though there is a slight increase in demand for smaller, individualized vehicles.
In the Balearic Islands, taxi operators have expressed a positive outlook on the special passenger collection regime. Antoni Bauzá, president of the Business Group of Autotaxi and Autoturismo of the Balearic Islands, stated that the unified tariff system has improved efficiency, though he called for more regulatory consistency across different municipalities.
Meanwhile, in Málaga, VTC services have overtaken traditional taxis for the first time in a Spanish province. Data from the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility shows 3,398 VTC licenses compared to 2,708 taxi licenses in the region, driven largely by high summer tourism demand.
