Spanish union CCOO pushes for shorter construction shifts during heat wave
The CCOO union in Albacete urged construction firms to adopt intensive workdays in July and August, limiting activity to the cooler morning hours to protect outdoor workers from extreme heat. Union officials highlighted that heat waves are becoming regular and cited examples of companies that have voluntarily adjusted schedules or halted work when temperatures reach orange alerts.
At the same time, CCOO joined UGT in a May 1st demonstration in Elche, demanding higher wages, affordable housing and a “full democracy.” Protesters also called for faster installation of classroom air‑conditioning to safeguard students from heat, and for updates to the 30‑year‑old occupational risk law to cover new heat‑related illnesses.
