Spain unions call general strike over housing and wages FAST-MOVING

Spain's two largest labor unions, CCOO and UGT, have agreed to call a 24-hour general strike this autumn. The mobilization is intended to demand higher wages and improved access to housing, addressing the rising cost of living and inflation.

The unions' demands include wage increases of between 4% and 7%, the implementation of salary revision clauses, and measures to facilitate housing access. They are also calling for the effective application of the Housing Rights Law, rent price limits in high-demand areas, and the expansion of the public housing stock.

The strike announcement comes in the context of upcoming general elections scheduled for November 29. While the unions aim to coordinate with social movements and tenant organizations, the exact date of the strike is yet to be determined. The employers' association, CEOE, has criticized the move, arguing that the protest's primary targets are government policies rather than business decisions, questioning its legal standing as a labor strike.
