Spanish unions call for general strike and 7% minimum wage hike

Spanish trade unions CCOO and UGT have called for a 24-hour general strike on November 11. The mobilization is driven by demands for improved wages and solutions to the housing crisis, including calls for more affordable public housing.

As part of the strike's objectives, the unions are proposing a 7% increase to the statutory minimum wage (SMI) for 2027. This would raise the monthly gross pay from the current €1,221 to €1,306, or approximately €18,290 annually. The unions argue this increase is necessary to offset inflation and rising living costs.

In response, the Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, has requested the advisory commission to submit its 2027 SMI proposal by early November. The government aims to finalize the increase before the general elections scheduled for late November.
