Spain faces general strike on November 11 over housing crisis

Spain is facing significant social unrest as major labor unions Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) and Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT) have called for a 24-hour general strike on November 11, 2026. This marks the first joint strike by the two largest unions since 2012. The mobilization is primarily driven by the national housing crisis, rising rents, and stagnant wages, with the Sindicato de Inquilinas also playing a central role in the movement.

The strike occurs in a highly charged political environment, just two weeks before the general elections scheduled for November 29. The call for early elections followed the failure of government-proposed rent protection decrees in Parliament. Protests have already manifested in various forms, including encampments in cities like Granada and Madrid's Puerta del Sol, where activists are camping to demand housing rights.

While the strike aims to address social issues like housing and cost of living, the employers' association CEOE has criticized the move, labeling it a 'political strike.' Additionally, the strike has caused friction within the labor movement, with some regional branches and unions, such as CSIF, declining to participate, arguing the motivations are political rather than strictly professional.
