Iberian unions call for general strike on November 11 over housing crisis

Labor unions and housing rights organizations across Spain and Portugal are mobilizing for a general strike on November 11. The movement focuses on the escalating housing crisis, rising cost of living, and stagnant wages.

In Spain, the CIG has organized demonstrations across Galicia, including O Barco, to demand higher minimum wages and rent controls. In Cantabria, the Housing Union (Sindicato de Vivienda) is launching a series of regional activities to address high rates of housing precariousness and the impact of tourism on local residents. In the Balearic Islands, UGT and CCOO leaders have described the strike as an indictment of a system that prevents workers and youth from accessing affordable homes, calling for increased public housing and limits on investment funds.

Spanning the peninsula, representatives from the Madrid Tenants Union have expressed optimism regarding an Iberian-wide strike, noting that the struggle for affordable housing is identical in both Spain and Portugal. Organizers are seeking coordination with Portuguese unions such as CGTP and UGT to build a cross-border network of resistance against housing speculation and precarious labor conditions.
