The 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), commonly known as the Shanghai Ranking, has been released, showing continued dominance by United States institutions. Harvard University maintains its first-place position for the 24th consecutive year, followed by Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). While the US holds eight of the top ten spots, China is rapidly expanding its presence, with 234 universities in the top 1,000 and 16 institutions in the top 100.

In Europe, the University of Paris-Saclay leads continental institutions at 13th place. The rankings highlight varying regional trends: Romania has not had a university in the top 1,000 for four consecutive years, whereas countries like Poland and Hungary maintain multiple high-ranking institutions.

Spain has seen a decline in its total representation, dropping from 36 universities in 2025 to 30 in 2026. The University of Barcelona remains the top-ranked Spanish institution, staying within the top 200 globally. Other Spanish universities, such as the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, also maintain strong positions, though several regional institutions have fallen out of the top 1,000 list.
