Shanghai Ranking 2026: Harvard leads as China expands global academic presence
The 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), commonly known as the Shanghai Ranking, has been released, maintaining Harvard University at the top of the global list for the 24th consecutive year. The United States continues to dominate the top tier, with Stanford and MIT following in second and third place. However, China is significantly expanding its presence, increasing its number of universities in the top 100 from 13 to 16 and holding the highest number of institutions in the top 1,000 with 234.
In Spain, the ranking shows a decline in overall representation. The number of Spanish universities in the top 1,000 has dropped from 36 in 2025 to 30 in 2026. Eight institutions fell out of the list, including the Universities of Cantabria, Baleares, Jaén, Lleida, Carlos III de Madrid, Cádiz, Córdoba, and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Conversely, the Universities of Rey Juan Carlos and Valladolid have re-entered the rankings. The University of Barcelona remains the top-ranked institution in Spain, maintaining its position in the 151-200 bracket.
Other regional highlights include the University of Seville climbing 49 positions to reach the 401-500 range, and the University of the Basque Country maintaining its spot in the top 400. In contrast, several Romanian universities remain absent from the top 1,000, and no Peruvian universities appear in the list, a trend attributed to the ranking's heavy emphasis on elite research metrics such as Nobel Prizes and highly cited researchers.
