Spanish universities face AI-driven academic disruption

A recent graduate of the University of Seville, 21‑year‑old Luis Miguel Trinidad, says the rise of large‑language models such as ChatGPT has fundamentally altered university life. He observes that “something has broken in the university,” as AI tools now allow many students to complete assignments in minutes, raising concerns over academic integrity and the erosion of critical thinking skills. A survey by the Fundación Conocimiento y Desarrollo found that 89% of Spanish university students regularly use generative AI chatbots, a trend mirrored in a study of nearly 12,000 students across 15 countries. Professors, initially skeptical, are now grappling with how to safeguard learning while accommodating the technology. Commentators warn that AI’s impact extends beyond education, reshaping employment, decision‑making and even weapon systems, underscoring a broader societal transformation.
