Spanish Universities Roll Out Major AI Transformation Programs

The Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) has launched the mission uoc. Ωmega, a strategic overhaul aimed at becoming a university native to artificial intelligence. The initiative includes a series of "ideation expeditions" involving around four hundred participants and an internal AI Week from 2‑4 June featuring training sessions, workshops and talks with external experts such as Google for Education and Volkswagen Group España. The university plans to embed AI tools like Gemini and NotebookLM into teaching, research and administration as part of its 2026‑2030 strategic plan.

At the same time, the University of Córdoba (UCO) and the Andalusian Institute for Agricultural, Fishery and Food Research (IFAPA) signed a general protocol to jointly develop AI‑driven research, innovation and knowledge transfer for the agro‑food sector. The agreement supports the International Chair ENIA, which is funded with over €2 million and involves 72 researchers working on data spaces, digital twins, predictive systems and virtual assistants to make agriculture more efficient, sustainable and competitive.

Both programmes illustrate a broader push in Spain to embed artificial intelligence across higher education and key economic sectors, linking academic expertise with industry and public‑policy goals.
