Spanish vegetable supply faces shortage amid rising European demand

A shortage in greenhouse vegetable production across Northern and Central Europe, specifically in the Netherlands and Belgium, has driven up demand for Spanish produce. However, supply in Spain is also currently limited, leading to rising prices for various products.

José Antonio Baños, president of the Ejidomar cooperative in Almería, reported that yellow peppers are particularly affected, with auction prices exceeding €3 per kilo due to scarcity. The shortage is attributed to high summer temperatures and pest issues, specifically Thrips parvispinus, which has impacted pepper acreage.

Due to these challenges, growers may shift toward planting cucumbers, zucchini, or eggplants in future cycles. Significant supply volumes from the Almería region are not expected to stabilize until November.
