Spain's Vice President Sara Aagesen Defends New Electricity Planning Framework

Vice President and Minister for the Ecological Transition Sara Aagesen told the Senate that the government aims to make Spain’s electricity‑grid planning “dynamic, agile and effective”. She announced reforms that will set a three‑year planning cycle, halve the previous six‑year timeline and allow targeted adjustments at least every two years. The changes, linked to the article 4 bis mechanism, are intended to speed up industrial connections, respond to “real projects” on the ground and generate economic traction and jobs. Aagesen emphasised the crucial role of regional governments in prioritising high‑impact investments and said all proposals from autonomous communities will be considered.

In a separate parliamentary session, Aagesen expressed pride in the government’s achievements, defending the energy transition and rejecting opposition criticism that the administration is too close to foreign fossil‑fuel interests. She highlighted the record increase in electricity generation from gas and underscored her commitment to continue “building and transforming” Spain’s energy system.
